"A Self Publisher's Tool Kit Vol. 1"
On the road to becoming a self published author you need the right tools to get going. After all you don't have the benefit of those teams of marketers and designers to do the heavy lifting for you. To help you get started, the first thing you need to do is familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the publishing process.
Perhaps the easiest way to becoming a self published author is by signing up for and publishing through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform. The platform provides unique ISBN's for your new book, in addition to offering print and/or digital copies. You can design your own book cover, if you haven't already done so. There are tool kits on the site that allow for unique designs or you can upload your own.
The KDP even allows you to customize the layout of both the front and back covers, choose the size of the printed version, whether you want hard copies or paperback, and (of course) set your own price. With library tools that allow you to track every order, and no inventory to keep track of (all printed versions are print on demand items) you can easily set up your shop within minutes and monitor your sales with the click of a button.
For a more detailed walk through of the process I highly recommend reading Kindle Publishing and Building Your Book For Kindle. These two books are filled with invaluable information on not only setting up your KDP store, but also making sure your manuscript is formatted properly so that there aren't any weird page layouts much like my first attempt at publishing through the platform had and I wish I had these books then to help me avoid that mistake.
There are lots of other books that can help walk you through the process, please feel free to read any of those if you think they would help more. The biggest takeaway from this article should definitely be to LEARN THE PROCESS by whatever means works best for you. It makes everything go a lot smoother and quicker once you have some level of familiarity with the content.
You can also check out Abe Books, a retailer in the UK that specializes in text books. They have a TON of resources that can help you get on your way to being published without paying thousands of dollars to traditional publishers.
That's all for now. Once you've set up your KDP store, I can show you how to use it to compete with your Barnes and Noble's Nook store and drive readership!

Murder?
No blood. No signs of a struggle
No witnesses of the event
A true puzzle
A decorated police officer
With most of his bust behind bars
Those who weren't never
Took their crimes this far
His wife was away from home
Out on a night on the town
Claim she got home late
Their oldest son never heard a sound
No health issues to speak of
So what was the cause of death?
No foreign fingerprints
And no signs of a theft
Upon investigation it was discovered
His life was insured for 100 g's
And his wife happens to be
The sole beneficiary
He had been promoted to captain
Just earlier in the week
Over a known corrupt cop
His rival, who in anger did speak
He was estranged from his father
Whom he would often still fight
For not choosing the family business
As his own way of life
The wife said she knew nothing
of the insurance policy
And that the claims adjuster
Had just called this morning
The other office had an alibi
And indeed it was air tight
He was responding to a 187
Following a gang fight
The father refused to talk
He had nothing to say of his dead son
Except that he regretted
The once happy conception
After searching the house again
For any clue previously missed
No new evidence found
It seems there was nothing amiss
Suddenly a scream from the study
Loud and heart breakingly shrill
The wife stands there crying and shaking
In one hand she held the pills
In the other she held the letter
And it said:
"If you're reading this,
I'm already dead..."
